my landlady told me to fill the sink with hot water & bleach and soak it for a couple of hours, which i have been doing and it works well, BUT

two problems: 1) i can only do it once a week because it takes time and i need my sink, and the moment it's clean it gets instantly messed up again (GRRRRR), and 2) i hate putting all that chlorine down the drains. (isn't it carcinogenic breaking down in the ground water?)

i tried non-chlorine bleach and scrubbing with bon ami and neither did a damn thing.
any ideas??

I've often wondered where my cleaning needs came from, I remember being the messiest teenager imaginable but as time soldiered on (and it does!) I've become my own mother. Approached 40 fast I often think I got this cleaning "illness" from my mother but is that true of all of us? Did my mother get it from hers? I can't imagine it as my grandmother never dusted in her life! Where does this need to clean come from? Does anyone have a theory?

If old clothes/shoes are barely worn and a good brand, I sell them. If there's still some wear left, I donate them. But giving worn out clothes/shoes to Goodwill causes another problem - if it's not saleable, then Goodwill has to pay to have it hauled away. So I had chucked my 15!!!yrs old musty leather boots straight into the trash box:
Shoes contain multiple materials. This makes them less recycling-friendly. If they're already musty, it's very possible they're harboring mold....YUCK! I´m all for donating, but IMO my 15yrs old leather boots were just plain gross household trash that cannot be recycled or re-used. I´m correct or not?

There are many people out there (but not nearly enough) who require clean surroundings to feel comfortable in a place. I, myself, cannot rest until my place is sufficiently cleaned and organized. If something is left undone, i get this anxious feeling that won't let me sit still and relax. Call me OCD, a Virgo, or what you like, but I am now convinced that I am not crazy.

As for boyfriends of the past who found my behavior strange or intolerable... I just figure those people were not meant to be around me. (I find it peculiar, since even some of them were neat freaks on the surface.) Just because my urge to clean came when they wanted to do something else, does not put me in the wrong.

What do you guys think... have you had any relationships suffer due to your cleaning tendencies? How did you resolve these issues? Or were you able to? What are some ways to avoid getting into another cycle of relationships plagued with these problems that come with being a neat freak?

I have a roughly 1500 sq. ft. house--2 bd, 2 ba--and I pay my house cleaner $120 to come clean for about 5-6 hours. Since I'm already a neat freak, there's not much of a mess to clean. She only comes once every 2 weeks and does the big and annoying jobs like mopping, vaccuuming, scubbing the bathroom. Much of the time I feel like she is at a loss for things to do because I find her spending hours on weird cleaning tasks like cleaning lint specks out of the window panes in the laundry room (she takes one hour to do this). I'm only bringing this up because my husband and I recently moved farther away from her house (it's very far--1 1/2 hour bus ride), and she asked for more money because of the commute (we already gave her a $20 raise from $100 because of the bigger house). I told her we wouldn't pay her any more for the commute.

Am I fair? I think I'm actually over paying her.

Instead I have a small, old thing where the freezer is inside the fridge. But I defrosted it the day before yesterday and am still smiling each time I open then door and 1.) see how clean and organized the fridge space is, and 2.) open the freezer door just for the heck of it to see everything neatly stacked and no ice! Ahhh!

But my problem is that it is old and I live in a very hot, humid climate and there's still nasty mildew (now more of a stain than the stuff itself) in the rubber seal around the door. Any good ideas for getting it out and keeping it out? And stains too? I'm afraid you might mention some wonderful product that I can't get down here in Mexico but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I told her she should hire a cleaning service, but she asked me if maybe I'd want to do it, seeing as I'm so anal... er... meticulous. I was wondering if anyone had some tips and or suggestions on a complete, top-to-bottom clensing. This is a house that probably hasn't had a good floor to ceiling cleaning in 10 years or more. Suggestions on cleaning products, techniques, and anything else would be welcome. The floors are yucky tile laminate, which will eventually be replaced, but for the moment I'd clean those too.

Actually, there are reports (where I do not know) of animal deaths due to liver malfunction. The product is very close in chemistry to anti-freeze and when a pet walks on it and then licks their paws..they injest the toxic chemicals.........similar with small children. Anyone else hear of this? The packaging does have a warning..but it is very small and hard to read.

Rats have made their way into my attic due to the cold weather, and some of them have died up there. It's my first winter in this house, so at first I didn't even know I had an attic, I just noticed a funky smell building day by day. Eventually I asked the landlord and he showed me how to get up there and we found and removed the used rat traps, but the smell remains and it's driving me insane.

I'm not sure if there's another rat that died somewhere I can't reach, or just that the decomposing rat smell is hanging around long after the body is gone (I did let them sit for 3 or 4 days not knowing what the smell could be).

Does anybody have any advice on how to remove decomposing animal smell? It's in everything--the air, the sheets, even some of the plastic dishes. It's incredibly gross.

I'd appreciate any advice you can give!

I find waking up to a messy house leaves you in a sour mood all day things run smoother when its clean. I also do the dishes counters high chair trays make a bottle for that midnight feeding and bring a couple of diapers upstaires for those wet nights kids get. He hates it because when it is an hour or so before bedtime Ill start cleaning and make him stay on the carpeted front room so he does not walk through or on my dirt or my freshly moped floor. When he tries to clean to help me he does it so half ass and it drives me crazy. I do not get mad just simply say here let me do it, so you know its my way but you still didnt do it wrong. He hates it he sees nothing with clutter and dirt and trash. 3 kids youd think even with all the cleaning in the world the house would still be dirty but i work hard, and he hates it!

i personally like to clean on week nights, especially when i have insomnia. the only problem is i can't run the vacuum at 3 in the morning. so, i tend to vacuum at random during normal wake hours and do major cleanings - like baseboards, shelves, stove, fridge, etc - in the middle of night.

i also gotta have the tunes playing while i clean

The latest thrill of my life is learning that if you take your sponge in the kitchen, and instead of laying it flat after it's used, rinsed, and done with... Set it on it's side so that it dries faster, and you avoid spoilage...

Greetings Neatlings -

I just wanted to post a little testimonial for OxyClean - it saved my life this weekend.
OK, my mom is living with us for a semester while she is on sebbatical. She also brought her dog, which is a subject of other threads later due to the intense reality of dog hair. So, anyway, without getting too into the history, my Mom is prohibited from doing our laundry due to previous disasters that mostly involved bleach and from things going in the dryer that aren't supposed to. (see I get a certain amount of my cleanliness obsession from my Mom who loves to bleach things - I think it is from growing up Catholic). My sister and I have banned her from doing our laundry for years now. However, mom being who she is can't hold back from doing laundry and goes ahead and puts a load of my whites in without checking the pockets! You guessed it: CHOCOLATE DISASTER. She didn't realize it was an issue, either, while the load was wet so she actually put the load in the DRYER!! YES CAN YOU BELIEVE IT??!! All my undies and wife beaters, my new shirt I just got, a fave white t-shirt, melanie's lacy tank top, etc. So of course I freaked out. Then after calming down I soaked everythng in the washer in a super strong mixture of OXY CLEAN. I used 20 scoops and filled the washer up about half way with cold water. It soaked all day (about 8 hours) and then I washed the load and you know what? IT WORKED! All my tighty whiteys are fresh and white again and don't look like I had diarrhea! My wife beaters are back to normal and ready to beat wives. Everything is sparkly clean and I didn't have to use chlorine bleach! It is a glorious defeat of the stain wars and I have Oxy Clean to thank for all of it. Thanks for listenting.
