I'm a clean freak but I live with seven people and four pets + my sisters messy teenage visiters. I have no idea how to maintain all the mess! I'm and expert organizer but when theres that many people/animals what can I do? I'm freaking out and I'm dealing with the mess by myself because my husband and mother work and my sister is lazy (comes with being 17 I suppose). Does anybody have any good ideas for keeping myself from going insane maintaining all of it?

Re: Messy! Three kids, lots of teen sisters, mom husband,dogs,cats....
Tue, April 10, 2007 - 1:54 PMThat many people and pets - I would go for professional services. You could try to hack it out with duty schedules, but I think in the end you'll be much happier with regular maid service. Good luck.

Tue, April 10, 2007 - 11:19 PMSometime you just have to drop your cleanliness requirements for a while. I know I had to do that after a while with my husband, step-daughter, and 2 dogs. I've realized it's not worth my sanity to try to maintain my previous level of cleanliness.

Tue, April 10, 2007 - 8:54 PMre-elvaluate your priorites, only do what is most important and ask for help. Sometimes when my mom is stressed out I bring my kids to her house, she plays with them and I clean up around her house. Your mom/sister/hubby could just do this while you do whatever else you need to do. If your little sister still wont help, just tell her to either clean up or you will let your little ones (pets included) play with her ipod (or some such treasure). -

Re: Messy! Three kids, lots of teen sisters, mom husband,dogs,cats....
Thu, April 12, 2007 - 11:50 AMI don't think you should waste your time/energy trying to clean/organize a house with all those people and pets. You will never be able to do it and will always feel frustrated.
I don't know how much of a "freak" you are but it might just feel better to have a little space that is yours. But is there any space in the house that you can claim as your own? A part of a basement or attic? Is there a storage shed or property where you could even build a little shed space for yourself? And when I say build, I don't mean professional construction necessarily. Maybe even something more "tree fort"-like.
And is your mom willing to lay down some cleaning rules with your sister? Being a certain age is not an excuse for sloppiness and 17 is not all that young.
Good luck! -

Mon, April 16, 2007 - 3:02 PMGrace...my sister is treated like a queen. She walks all over my mom and my mom doesn't care. If I spoke up about my sisters sloppiness I would be kicked out. There is no space to call my own. -

Re: Messy! Three kids, lots of teen sisters, mom husband,dogs,cats....
Mon, April 16, 2007 - 8:15 PMIf there's no space in the house to call your own, you might look for a space outside the home. It might be a place in the woods or in a local park. It might be a little nook in the public library. A place where you can find peace and straighten things up a bit. Maybe even some potted plants or a little garden patch that you can take care of.
And I'd get a cardboard box and toss all the crap your sister leaves around the house in that. My friend used to put his roommate's dirty dishes that he left hanging around in his bed! People *can* get the message. -
