my kitchen sink is very, very old and the enamel is very thin. as a result, any droplet of food or piece of metal that comes into contact with the remaining enamel leaves instant horrible-looking stains & marks.
my landlady told me to fill the sink with hot water & bleach and soak it for a couple of hours, which i have been doing and it works well, BUT
two problems: 1) i can only do it once a week because it takes time and i need my sink, and the moment it's clean it gets instantly messed up again (GRRRRR), and 2) i hate putting all that chlorine down the drains. (isn't it carcinogenic breaking down in the ground water?)
i tried non-chlorine bleach and scrubbing with bon ami and neither did a damn thing.
any ideas??

Re: bleach question
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 9:07 AMThere are rubber or plastic matts you can get for the bottom of your sink. Of course, this presents a whole new problem of cleaning, but it would protect the bottome of the sink from damage. -

Re: bleach question
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 9:39 AMthat is an idea, but yes, the slimy mold issue has kept me away from those mats so far; also it's the sides just as much as the bottom. and the staining liquids would run under the mat, wouldn't they? do they make sink liners that come all the way up? *grin* i guess that would be called: a new sink. -

Re: bleach question
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 10:55 AMYeah, I wonder if there is like a big tub insert you could put in...but that's kinda far-fetched. At least it's not a stainless steel sink that shows every water drop.
I live in Oakland too in an old house, and the old enamel sink has to be scrubbed after every use (if I want it perfect - to be realistic, it probably only gets scrubbed once a week), but it's the edges that bother me - they get all black and moldy. I guess I should re-caulk, but I'm beginning to think all the plumbing in this house is held together with caulk. I won't even tell you about the bathroom...
Bleach can hurt some old pipes, I think, but probably not too much if you flush it thru with hot water. But now we're under water rationing, so you probably won't want to do that either.

Re: bleach question
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 2:45 PMah, but you just dry the sink with a towel when you're done and voila - all shiny & no spots! bliss.
i guess i'll keep bleaching for now.
yes, the caulk in my house is also a nightmare. i brought up the bathroom caulk issue (in a "don't blame me" kind of way) and my landlady decided that meant i would like my whole bathroom dismantled for two weeks. two weeks with no toilet or bathing in my own house... never again! no way i'm mentioning the kitchen sink! *laugh*
saw a great recipe for grout cleaner: 3 c baking soda, 1 c hot water, scrub paste in with brush. haven't tried it yet, but i sense mold of all colors quivering in fear as i write this...
any idea how to get mold off paint without taking the paint with you? -

Re: bleach question
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 2:58 PMI wonder if we have the same landlady.
A corner of the study got a moldy ceiling before she replaced the roof. I used a spray paint called "Kilz" (may have two ll's) - basically a mold-killing and covering paint - comes in different colors and regular brush-on paint. -

Re: bleach question
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 3:32 PMgood tip!! i'll remember it. (unfortunately, "our" landlady has a very unique relationship to color... and a gift for finding colors so bizarre that nothing after 1950 could ever hope to match it. *laugh*)
thanks for all your help!
